Biography

"In a petition to the chief official in Freudenberg 'the children of Johann Fischbach, decd., former Schultheiss of Freudenberg, and the guardians appointed for his minor grandchildren' asked for the removal of the building and the restoration of the land to its old condition. The case was heard June 8, 1564 and a number of witnesses, acquainted with the local situation were called in, among them "Neese (Agnes) of Oberfischbach, widow of the deceased Schultheiss; Wilhelm Becker of Oberfischbach; Nesse (Agnes), daughter of the deceased Schultheiss; and Theiss, his son.'

"Theiss and his wife are believed to have had at least seven children as referenced in the list of houses and occupants of 1563. Theiss carried on a moderate-sized farming business with 1 horse, 8 cattle, 12 sheep and 7 hogs, which he cared for with his wife and children without a farm hand or maid. Of the children, then, some must therefore have been of somewhat advanced years. Accordingly we can estimate about the year 1540 as the year of Theiss's marriage, and his own birth-date as about 1515. He died after June 8, 1564 and before Aug. 16, 1566, the day of the assessment of the special taxes of this year; in the special tax list of 1566 there stands in his place 'Treina (i.e. Cathrina), Theiss's widow.'"^[1]
